20.02.2013 Coupe Icare 2013 - celebrates it 40th Grand International Free Flight Festival
Still in place after all these years is the original team of this impressive enterprise that has regularly integrated some new blood mainly in the form of professional pilots. For four continuous decades, the Coupe has surpassed all expectations as the most fun, entertaining, inspiring gathering for the passionate and the curious from all four corners of the earth who live or long for the dream of Icarus.
1974 - 2013... 40th Coupe Icare, here we go!
Forty years ago in the heart of the Iseroise Alps, a small band of daring sportsmen dreamed up a fun sort of flying meet with a mix of nations to pay tribute to the discoveries and developments in human powered free flight of all shapes, sizes and kinds. The chosen site– niched between the Chartruese range and the Grésivaudan valley just 30 minutes from Grenoble and Chambéry in the villages of Saint-Hilaire-du-Touvet et de Lumbin – has never changed.
Traditionally, the event occurs just after school starts on the third weekend of September. This is when the general public flocks to the sites to oooh and aaaah over the thrilling stunts and amazing flying machines: hang gliders, paragliders, paramotors giros, ultralight planes and hot air balloons, kites and model aircraft...
From Thursday 19 to Sunday 22 September, 2013 for the 40th Coupe Icare anniversary, the little mountain villages of only several thousand inhabitants will burst at the seams with thousands of spectators from near and far.
Aces of each aerial discipline, top designers and the most creatively disguised pilots imaginable will be there to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Icarus and to share their passions with the general public.
Four decades is a large chunk of the history of hang gliding and paragliding marked by the history of the Coupe Icare. These fantastically free sports have managed to turn the heads not only of the public but also of regional authorities and international press.
Flying men and women of every continent make it to this unrivalled annual festival that, being as professional, as it is festive, joyously mixes pilots, amateurs and spectators.
Over the past 40 years, the Coupe Icare has constantly evolved by proposing new disciplines, new stunts, shows and activities... Today over 900 volunteers assisting about a hundred professionals collaborate year round to organize this great paragliding and air sports extravaganza. For this year’s celebration that promises even more surprises than the average, the numbers are likely to climb.
The last editions of the Coupe Icare attracted up to 80,000 spectators and 10,000 pilots for the thrilling aerial shows, the Trade Fair and the Film Festival not to mention the artists and animations of all sorts for the very young and the never-too-old.
The Coupe Icare has a new illustrator for its 40th!
Last June, painter/illustrator Valérie Dumas was selected among the 8 bidding candidates design the next Coupe Icare posters. Since
her early childhood, this local artist has been translating her visions of dreamland into watercolors and oils, children’s book illustrations
and events posters. Her portrait will be included in the forthcoming press release.
The Coupe Icare salutes Annick Saint-Sabin who conceived the sumptuous festival posters of the past five years.
